Abrams Fire Fact Sheet – 5/3/11 (8:00 pm) « NM Fire Info

Cause: Human-Caused

Location: Two miles south of White Sands Missile Range Headquarters

Current size: 13,424 acres            Containment: 85%

Agency: The fire started on Dept of Defense (DOD) jurisdiction. On Tuesday, May 3rd, the Type 3 Incident Management Team led by Doug Boykin transferred command back to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The BLM will continue managing the fire suppression efforts on the Abrams Fire with a Type 3 organization, with Bobby Sutton as the Incident Commander.

Fuel Type: Pinon-juniper, mahogany, cactus, and grass at lower elevations and ponderosa pine, grass and conifer at higher elevations.

Fire Behavior: Minimal fire behavior – it is estimated that the fire is active within an area of approximately 100 acres. As interior pockets of vegetation continue to burn and smolder, smoke will be generated and will be visible from Las Cruces and the surrounding area.

Suppression Actions: Firefighters will continue to reinforce hand-lines in order to keep the fire contained. Plans for tomorrow include utilization of engines and hand-crews to mop-up and hold lines. Some rehab work has also begun and resources will be reseeding areas that were disturbed by dozers and/or hand-lines that were constructed during fire suppression activities.

Resources: 2 – Type 1 Hotshot (hand crews) and 2 engines are assigned to the fire. Currently, 55 personnel are assigned to the fire.

Structures Threatened: No structures are threatened.

Closures: Dripping Springs Natural Area (DSNA), Bar Canyon Trail, Baylor Pass Trail, Pine Tree Trail (near Soledad Canyon), and Aguirre Springs Campground are closed to the public, however, on Thursday, May 5th, Dripping Springs and Bar Canyon Trail (Soledad Canyon area) will be re-opened.
