If, like me, you have numerous icons in your dock you can save some valuable dock space by creating folders that contain similar applications. Here's how … Open Finder window > Applications (cmd-shift-A) > create new folder (cmd-shift-N) > give the folder a name that makes sense. For this example I'm going to call my new folder 'App Aliases'. Open a new Finder window (cmd-N) > drag new window so both are visible > Applications (cmd-shift-A) > locate an application that you want to put into a Dock folder > Action menu > Make Alias > drag alias across to the first Finder window and drop into the newly created folder. I'll start with Address Book. Repeat step 2 for all apps that you want to put into this Dock folder. I'll add Mail and iCal. Once you have all the application aliases in the new folder you need to drag this folder to the Dock and drop it on the right of the Dock size adjuster. Right-click on the new icon to choose how you want the folder to display (Folder or Stack – since all folders created this way will look the same it's often best to choose Stack) and also how you'd like to see the content display (Fan, Grid, List or Automatic – if you have only a few apps in the folder then Grid is a good choice – see below).
~ Tip works with Snow Leopard (OS 10.6)
