Just as our exams got over…. The relief was small, yet big….
It was a really great thing that came knocking…… It was nothing small or big… It was nothing too important or too ignorable… It was an opportunity that came knocking…which no one else would have got… this came only to those who would feel lucky to have had this…. (I guess I'm exaggerating too much) It was a visit to one of the top institutions of India… The Indian Institute of Science…. Every Science lover or geek would at least want to see it once in his life. Thanks to CJC and Science Forum….. The class representatives and the Science Forum representatives got the chance to go there on the 5th day of March 2011. The students were divided into groups for Chemistry, Physics and Electronics Departments.Entering the campus which was flooded by trees was very enjoyable…..
A group of seven students were all set to go to the Chemistry departments.
The teachers of the Chemistry department from CJC were equally enthusiastic to view the exhibits. There was this old fashioned buildings that we entered, and there came the usual smell of the chemistry lab. Some students were confused if they had to bring their lab coats!…..
It was the lab where they synthesized many compounds and the best of all, we could see what was liquid nitrogen and its uses…..
The next thing was really one of the best things about the trip…. We saw this man of say 50 years…playing with fire!!! Well, he showed us how lab instruments were made…. He had a sharp gun like thing which shot flame of high intensity. He used the gas mixture of Oxygen and CNG to mould the various apparatus… He made a broken glass tube into a cute looking small round-bottom flask….and many other apparatus…. Then we went to the Chemistry pavilion where, students from different specializations in chemistry, showed us experiments like preparation of cape roll, making of nylon, reducing the surface tension in milk, checking alcohol levels in blood, and many other things…… Then came this volunteer who asked us to go to the theater where a lecture was to be given by two professors… They spoke about photoelectric cells, electricity, semiconductors, etc….. Even though it was interesting, some of them in the afternoon felt a little sleepy (as usual), but still were able to comprehend some of the parts of the lecture…. I guess this was a great opportunity and no one on the trip would ever be able to forget this wonderful experience!!!! All thanks to CJC and the Science Forum!!!!!!- Aravind R (Science Forum Representative), PCMB 'C'
****** I'm really glad that I attended the "open day" programme held at held at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). As we all know that the IISc is the paradise of Indian science…it is the nurturing ground for Indian scientists. It was a very good experience. My interest in the subject increased after visiting the place. The volunteers were very co-operative and explained all the experiments displayed from the scratch and made sure we understood every thing. The experiments in the cryogenics field were amazing and interesting. We also got to know that numerous experiments can be performed with liquid nitrogen and also about its uses in various fields. The experiments displayed in the material science department were really good as we people hadn't studied anything related to that topic in our academics. The working models displayed in the physics department were excellent as the volunteers explained in simple and easy to understand language. Overall, everything was very good and worth visiting the institution. I really liked the atmosphere of the IISc as its apt for studies since it is refreshing and calm and pollution free. I always wished to visit the IISc and was enthralled by the entire experience. I would like to thank our college and the forum for providing such a wonderful opportunity to us, the students, by taking us to such a prestigious institution located in "namma Bengaluru".Sukrutha Ravi, PCMB 'F'
******* Our visit to the IISc (Indian Institute of Science), on the 5th of march 2011, was an opportunity to discover and experience the wonders of science. The spectacular exhibits by the students/researchers offered a remarkable insight into all the fields of science. The 4-5hr visit did wonders to us! We were given a choice to choose one subject, Rini and I chose chemistry. The place was divided into many compartments, each having many things of great interest and value. First we were taken to a lab where organic compounds are synthesized. The information that we got truly helped us understand chemistry. Next was glass blowing, the intensity with which the person executed it left us spell bound! After this we encountered different stalls each dealing with different concepts like diffusion, surface tension, density, luminosity… Broadly speaking, it was a treasure house of facts. We were exposed to many important concepts from Chemistry. For us, the visit to IISc was a thrilling experience and what we saw and observed was a part of the richest experiences of our life. The visit has left an indelible impression on our minds.
