Although this news excites him and it is the opportunity of a lifetime for him, and he has the support of his father and most of his family, the news is not supported by his mother. She believes that if he travels to France his bond with his family will be broken forever due to the distance between them. Ultimately, and after many discussions from both her husband and Camara, she reluctantly agrees for him to travel, however she is grieved and saddened. His father agrees for him to travel and even encourages him as long as he promises him to come back and help his people when he is done.
He is also forced to leave Marie behind, with whom he has struck a great frienship after many years of studying together and spending time together. However he does understand that this is for his own and his family's benefit.
Shortly before his departure, his father gives him a map of Paris so that he does not get lost or find himself stranded or in a hard situation. Laye bids a long farewell to all his family members, especially with his mother who is saddened but approving of his decisions. Laye then departs on a plane with his fathers map in his pocket, ready to face the future.
Camara Laye in this chapter probably is the most mature of all chapters because he is making important decisions for his future and he is ready to leave his family to build a good career and return to his homeland with a plan to help them with his education.
