the list « MacKenzie Brooke

i'm very glad i have a mindless job. i do all my most serious thinking at work. after many shifts spent thinking about grad school, i have come to a conclusion. i am going to take a gap year to prep for the irish lit program i will be applying to at bc and nyu. i know acceptance into either program is a long shot. i just can't live with the not knowing, so i am going to give my all on my one try. so, here is my to-do list for my gap year.

*1. find a full time job

*2. take cello lessons

*3. find a french tutor (there is a translation portion to the admissions exam)

4. take gre prep courses

5. take gre

6. find a resource to start learning gaelic (i would be spending two semesters learning it)

*7. further develop previous papers. seek publishing (academic papers or poems)

8. read kinsella's translation of the irish epic, joyce's ulysses and portrait of an artist as a young man.

9. study as much irish history as possible. begin to follow irish current events.

10. begin to get involved in the workings of a theater (probably volunteer at the capitol), as i would be spending a semester working at the abbey

this seems like a lot of work, because it is. i want to be in an irish lit program in the worst way, so i will do whatever it takes. the worst that can happen is that i am not accepted and will have postponed pursuing my teaching degree for year while still bettering myself.

*indicate areas where i need help. if you or someone you know could help in an area, please let me know.
