Sloppy Giuseppes | swellkid

An Italian version of Sloppy Joes with a thick, meaty Bolognese.  I was trying to come up with an alternative to a hamburger and thought of this.  The best part is there are lots of veggies and your kiddos won't even notice.  You might be tempted to skip the garlic bread bun, don't!  The crisp, toasted bun makes the dish!  Serves 6

1 T. olive oil 1 yellow onion, diced 2 carrots, peeled and diced 2 celery stalks, diced 2 lbs. ground beef 1 1/2- 15 oz. cans of tomato sauce, I used Hunts 1 t. salt 1 t. pepper 1 t. dried oregano 6 good bakery burger buns or Kaiser rolls 1/4 C. olive oil 1 t. garlic powder Grated parmesan cheese

Heat the oil to medium heat in a large Dutch oven and add the onion, carrots, and celery.  Stir and cook until the onions are transparent, about 8 minutes.  Add the ground beef and cook until browned.  Add the sauce, salt, pepper, and oregano.  Stir to combine.  Bring to a boil and reduce the heat.  Don't cover the pot.  Allow the mixture to simmer and thicken for about thirty minutes.

Meanwhile, brush the cut sides of the burger buns with the olive oil.  Sprinkle the buns with the garlic powder and a little salt.  Heat the broiler to high and broil the buns until crisp and golden- about two minutes.

Serve the meat on the buns, topped with parmesan.
