Castle Dene Allotment Site « Prudhoe, Northumberland

Seeds in traysThe land is leased from the Duke of Northumberland and managed by the Prudhoe Gardeners' Association on behalf of Prudhoe Town Council. The Town Council manages the lease of the site.

The lease runs out in 2015.  Prudhoe Town Council has asked the question about renewing the lease. Northumberland Estates which manages the Duke's properties is not interested in discussions until 2013. This leaves the Town Council, Prudhoe Gardeners' Association and a group of allotment holders in limbo.

No definite reasons have been given. One does wonder if the situation is influenced by the present planning application going through the system concerning land which was allotment land (though not managed by Prudhoe Town Council). One also wonders if the last gardening season at the Castle Dene site will be the year 2014 with the year 2015 being time to clear off sheds, plants and such.

Am I concerned? Well only because I have an allotment at Castle Dene and don't fancy starting an allotment plot from scratch at the tender age of 69 (think 2015) when I have an easily managed plot which will not required major heavy works in the future. This ties in with the Government Review of legislation which could mean the end of councils having to provide allotment land where there is a demand for it.

It does rather spoil the pleasure of maintaining a productive plot and leave me wondering what to do in the future if I end up with no plot. Share this: Facebook StumbleUpon
