Inside the play: Butler baseline out of bounds « The Mikan Drill

Butler looked unorganized as they were rushing to get in position as they were setting up for this play and I was not sure they were going to be able to run any successful action off of this baseline out of bounds. However, they did turn an unorganized start to the set into an open three point shot by Shelvin Mack.

The play starts with Matt Howard setting a screen for Ronald Nored so Nored can get open to catch the inbounds pass on the wing. Notice where Rob Brandenberg (boxed in red) is to start the play. He is defending Mack, who is inbounding the ball but instead of putting pressure on the ball, he is protecting the rim. As I have talked about before, I am fine with this defense of the inbounder but Butler has designed a set to take advantage of how VCU is using Brandenberg to defend Mack.

After Nored catches the inbounds pass, Mack sprints from out of bounds and runs off a staggered screen set by Andrew Smith and Matt Howard. Brandenberg is several steps behind Mack from the start, since he was in the paint to protect the rim when Mack made the pass to Nored. This allows Mack to use the staggered screens and get open at the top of the key before Brandenberg can recover.

Part of the credit goes to Howard as well, who sets a really nice screen as the second part of the staggered screen and gets a part of Brandenberg to slow him down even more. The bigger key is how Mack does not hesitate after making the pass to Nored and makes a quick line toward the top of the key to get the pass back from Nored before Brandenberg can recover.

After talking several times about not pressuring the inbounder but using the defender as we saw in this clip to protect the rim and help on cutters I thought this play was a nice set to show how to take advantage of the defense playing this way. By sprinting off of screens toward the top of the key, Mack was able to get the pass and get the shot off before the defender could catch up.
