Earth Day 2011 « Intense Soul

Greetings, all! I hope the winter blues have melted away with the snow and spring fever is kicking in (and no, I don't mean allergies). Tis the season for trees and flowers to blossom, gardens to be planted, wildlife to stick their cute twitchy noses from their burrows, and days to become longer. One of the most important holidays is upon us as well. One that holds no religious meaning, but is observed worldwide. One that celebrates our home, our enviornment, our surroundings. I'm talking about Earth Day.

In the Spring of 1970, the very first Earth Day was recognized nationally in the United States. 20 years later, in 1990, 141 countries joined the Earth Day Network, and today, over 175 countries participate in Earth Day activities. It's amazing how many people globally partake in celebrating Mother Earth.

The only thing that gets me kind of miffed is that Earth Day only comes once a year. The other 364 days out of the year, most people don't give a whole lot of thought and consideration to our planet, and that's sad. Our planet is constantly working for us, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It's trashed, overpopulated, overfished/hunted, resources are depleted… We're basically slapping our home in the face repeatedly. We need to give her the same love she gives us, every single day, or she won't be able to sustain us any longer.

So this Earth Day, consider doing something to give back to our planet. It's the least you can do. And while you're at it, try to make small changes to your life so you can give back every day. Recycle, walk or bike instead of driving short distances, start composting, buy organic, support farmer's markets and other local farmers, use travel mugs instead of paper cups at coffee shops, etc. Small changes can make a huge difference!!

Happy Earth Day!
